Jack Worthing è un giovane gentiluomo che vive nell'Inghilterra della fine dell'800. Adottato da un ricco signore che lo ha trovato in una borsa a Victoria Station è l'irreprensibile tutore della nipote del suo benefattore. In realtà, per distrarsi, si è inventato un fratello scapestrasto di nome Ernest e va spesso a Londra per tirarlo fuori dai guai. Tutto va bene fino a quando Jack s'innamora di una ragazza dell'alta società, Guendolen Fairfax, che ha deciso di sposare un ragazzo di nome Ernest mentre sua madre ha idee ben diverse sul suo futuro.
